Multidimensional Tourism Institute
Multidimensional Tourism Institute (MTI) is the pioneer of the tourism industry: we lay the foundations for better operational preconditions across the entire industry through critical tourism research and forward-looking industry development. We educate tourism experts and collaborate closely with the business sector, the international science community, educational organisations and authorities.
Network of experts and cooperation on sustainable tourism
The Multidimensional Tourism Institute is a joint expert organisation of the University of Lapland and Lapland University of Applied Sciences. We actively contribute to the development of the tourism industry and are part of shaping the futures of tourism through bold research projects and creative development.
MTI brings together experts working in the field of sustainable tourism at northern higher education institutions. At the University of Lapland, our experts work, for example, in the Tourism degree programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, in the fields of applied visual arts and design at the Faculty of Art and Design, within nature education at the Faculty of Education and at the Arctic Centre and Education and Development Services. At Lapland University of Applied Sciences, we work, for example, within hospitality management, business economy, sports and nature resource education.
Sustainable tourism is a shared strategic choice of Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland. MTI’s updated research programme How can tourism continue sustainably? (2025–2030) functions as a framework for the universities’ research and development of sustainable tourism. The research programme provides space for research and development in different fields of the universities, in line with their own objectives. Additionally, the research programme enables the ideation of new, joint themes and collaboration within a more focused expert network than before
The Institute is jointly managed by the Director of the tourism education division of the University of Applied Sciences and the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University. The steering is supported by a management team consisting of the Director, the Dean, the Professor in charge of the degree programme in Tourism Studies, the Manager of the Tourism and Sports Instructor Degree Programmes, and student representatives from both universities.
